Even though gas prices dipped a bit in recent weeks, they’re still sky-high, which means strong demand for fuel-saving hybrid cars.  And the tight supplies are compounded by low inventories directly or indirectly caused by this year’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan. As a result you’ll find incentives this month only on the largest and least-efficient hybrids.

Given high gas prices and the flood of new and recently redesigned compact cars, you’d assume most sales incentives in this class would be on low-demand models, and for the most part you’d be correct.  But the surprise here is the small marketing incentive and cut-rate financing on the all-new and just-released 2012 Honda Civic. Consumer and direct-to-dealer rebates continue plentiful on midsize crossover SUVs in October. Many prominent nameplates get sizeable discounts in an effort to attract attention in this highly competitive market segment. The top deal is on the midsize Mitsubishi Endeavor, which is being discontinued after model-year 2011 following years of consumer indifference. The 2011 Acura ZDX is the oddest bird here; most of its crossover utility is negated by sleek coupe-like styling that makes for a cramped rear seat and small cargo hold.
